The Next Generation Project's National Assembly was held at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars on June 5-7, 2008 in Washington, DC. The event was co-sponsored by the Wilson Center, led by President and Director, Lee H. Hamilton. Panelists included Jane Holl Lute, currently Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security and Sonal Shah, head of the White House Domestic Policy Council’s Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation. At the conclusion of two years of regional Assemblies, Fellows concluded that a coherent strategic vision was needed for the United States to lead a transformed world characterized by diffused power. They defined national security not solely in terms of military dominance but also by sound financial institutions and independence from foreign oil. Governments were found to be increasingly sharing ground with businesses and NGOs and knowledge and information were indicated as key elements of strength.
