Uniting America--The Economy: Sustaining Growth with Opportunity
June 10, 1999 - June 13, 1999
Topic(s)

'The American Economy: Sustaining Growth with Opportunity' was part of the larger Uniting America project that ran from 1999 to 2002. The Assembly focused on the larger structural changes in the American economy, including productivity, growth, income inequality, and the aging of the baby boom generation.  The resulting report highlighted the need for stronger commitments to lifelong education, greater investment in physical capital and scientific research, and an open market environment in which innovation and entrepreneurship can flourish. The meeting also predicted that programs like Social Security and Medicare, enormously successful in assisting the elderly in the past, would come under increasing pressure as the elderly portion of the population increases.
