Race is easily the defining point of American disunity. The issue's sensitivity and divisiveness are continuously called to our attention by our media and culture -- issues such as bilingual education, census categories, affirmative action, and racial and ethnic profiling are frequently in the headlines but rarely openly discussed. In its scope and volatility, race poses a challenge to America, a challenge to become one country in which all Americans are part of the whole. Published in 2001, the report centered on the belief that opportunities for all groups and the common good are interrelated. The convening group sought progress in criminal justice, immigration, and economic opportunity.

Colin Kahl
Colin Kahl is Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East. Dr. Kahl is on a three-year public service leave from Georgetown University, where he is a professor in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service focusing on international security, American foreign policy in the Middle East, and terrorism.   Colin is a Next Generation fellow and was on the leadership team -- and featured speaker -- for The Next Generation Project.
