Following an Assembly of over one hundred urban policy and economic development experts from throughout the state, The American Assembly and co-sponsors released Revitalizing the Legacy Cities of Upstate New York, which praised partnerships with major anchor institutions and advocated aligning local government and education efforts with Governor Cuomo’s decentralized Regional Economic Development Councils.

Author(s) Global Congress on Intellectual Policy and the Public Interest

After convening over 180 international experts on the subject of public interest and intellectual property law and policy, the Global Congress on Intellectual Property and the Public Interest concluded that international intellectual property policy affects a broad range of interests within society, not just those of rights holders. Transparency is a vital dimension of intellectual property and it encourages broad public participation and markets alone are not sufficient to achieve a just allocation of information goods.

Recommendations included using market-driven development strategies to focus on stronger neighborhoods while more economically challenged areas are employed for interim uses that require lower public investment. Land banks and supportive partnerships among federal, state, and local governments also figure prominently.

Sonal Shah

Sonal Shah served as Director of the Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation in the White House from 2009 to 2011, where she coordinated governmental efforts to aid innovative nonprofit groups and social entrepreneurs to address pressing social problems. She was named an American Assembly Next Generation Fellow in 2009. Previously, Shah managed and implemented two of Google.org's global development initiatives and served on President Obama's Transition Board. Currently, she is an Institute of Politics fellow at Harvard University.
